EDWARDSVILLE – The Friends of the Col. Benjamin Stephenson House are hosting their annual dinner and auction on Saturday, Feb. 17 at the Leclaire room on the N.O. Nelson campus.
This year’s dinner and auction will begin a year of celebration for the Illinois Bicentennial. “We want the dinner to be like a birthday party,” said Stephenson House Director RoxAnn Raisner. “It will also be a reunion of former board members. We’re inviting them and we’d like to thank them and honor them for their service.”
The state bicentennial is important to the Stephenson House, Raisner said, because Benjamin Stephenson was one of the writers of the Illinois Constitution. He was a delegate to the 1818 Illinois Constitutional Convention and he also signed the document. “This house is the only house of someone who signed it that’s still standing,” she said. After Stephenson was appointed the Receiver of Public Moneys by President Madison, his home became a center of political, economic and social activity for Edwardsville and the surrounding area.
Doors open for the dinner at 5 p.m. Dinner will be served at 6. Dinner is once again being provided by Bella Milano’s and will consist of roasted pork loin, chicken Milano, Milano house salad, au gratin potatoes, cavatelli with meat sauce and carrots in a maple glaze. Desserts will include of a variety of birthday cakes and other desserts from local bakeries and dinners that will be auctioned off. A cash bar will be available.
There will also be birthday games and a silent auction. The oral auction will start after dinner.
“We’re still getting donations for the auction, and we probably will up until the day of the auction,” Raisner said. “We have a quilt from Jen Mercer, who always gives us something beautiful. We have tickets to various shows.” There are also several autographed items, including several books.
“One thing that is new this year is a Jane Austen-themed mystery dinner here at the house for 10 people,” Raisner said. “We’ll have it in October during our mourning exhibit. We’ll serve period-type foods using historical recipes. It’s a murder/mystery, so we’ll start in the parlor with the coffin. We’re very excited about this.” She said that they had done themed dinners before, but never at the house.
Another auction item is a Nancy Fuller dinner party. Fuller is a chef from the Food Network and she has put together the dinner and designed the recipes used.
Tickets to several events will be up for auction, including Fox Club tickets for “The Color Purple,” a tour and tasting for 10 at the Schlafly Brewery, an in-home wine tasting for 12 and Park Hopper tickets from Disney World.
The Jazz Band and AcaFellaz and Bel Canto groups from EHS will be providing the entertainment for the evening, and Ahrens and Neimeier will be running the auction.
Tickets are $40 per person or $400 for a table of 10 and are available now. To purchase, contact the Friend of the Benjamin Stephenson House at 618-692-1818, stephensonhouse.org, or [email protected]
